Why Testing Matters
Every commenter who triggers your automation is a warm lead who raised their hand. If the DM does not arrive, the link is broken, or the wrong message sends, that person moves on and you never get them back. Testing takes about two minutes and protects every future lead you would otherwise lose. How to Test Your Campaign
1
Set the campaign to Test Mode
In your WilloSend dashboard, open the campaign you created and change its status from Draft to Test Mode. In Test Mode, WilloSend processes real comments and sends real DMs — but only to accounts you designate as test accounts. It will not fire on every comment.
2
Use a different device or account
Open Instagram on a second device, or ask a friend to help. Do not use your own account to comment — Instagram prevents accounts from DMing themselves, so the test will not reach your inbox.
3
Comment the exact keyword on the connected post
Navigate to the specific post you attached the campaign to and leave a comment with your exact keyword — for example,
GUIDE. Type it exactly as you configured it in the campaign. Do not add punctuation, extra spaces, or additional words.4
Verify the DM arrives
Within a few seconds, the test account’s DM inbox should receive your automated message. Confirm:
- The follower’s first name populated correctly in place of
[First Name] - The link in the DM is present and correctly formatted
- Clicking the link opens the intended page without errors
5
Check the public comment reply
If you enabled a comment reply, return to the post and confirm that WilloSend posted a public reply under the test comment. Verify the reply text looks natural and is one of the variations you wrote.
Common Test Issues and Fixes
Most test failures have a simple root cause. Work through this list before assuming something is broken on WilloSend’s end. DM did not arrive- Go to Settings → Connected Accounts in WilloSend and confirm your Instagram account still shows a green connected status. If it shows disconnected or an error, click Reconnect and repeat the OAuth flow, making sure to grant both required permissions (read comments and send messages).
- Confirm the keyword you commented matches exactly what you configured in the campaign — including that you did not add extra characters.
- Confirm you tested from a different account, not your own.
- Copy the URL from your DM message field in the campaign builder and paste it directly into a browser address bar. If it fails there, the problem is with the destination URL, not WilloSend.
- Check for invisible characters or line breaks that may have been introduced when you pasted the URL. Delete the URL field and retype or re-paste it fresh.
- In the campaign builder, confirm the Enable Comment Reply toggle is switched on and that you have saved at least one reply variation.
- Allow up to 10–15 seconds for the public reply to appear — there can be a short delay separate from the DM delivery.
Going Live
Once your test passes, activate the campaign for real.1
Switch status from Test Mode to Active
In the campaign settings, change the status from Test Mode to Active and save. WilloSend now responds to every comment that matches your keyword on the connected post, immediately and around the clock.
Once a campaign is Active, it responds to comments on that post 24/7 — including comments left on older posts you have attached a campaign to retroactively. There is no time limit; the automation runs until you pause or delete the campaign.
Write a CTA That Drives Comments
Your automation is only as effective as the number of followers who know to use it. A vague or buried call to action leaves most of your audience guessing. Be explicit: tell followers the exact word to type and exactly what they will receive. In the Video
Add overlay text directly in your Reel or video content. Place it on screen for at least two seconds in a high-contrast font. Examples:Comment GUIDE for the free downloadType RECIPE below and I'll DM you the linkComment PLAN → I'll send it straight to your DMs
In the Caption
Open your caption with the CTA — not three paragraphs in. The first line is the only line most followers read before tapping away. Strong first-line CTA examples:Want the full system? Comment GUIDE below and I'll DM you the link instantly.Drop RECIPE in the comments and I'll send you the meal prep PDF for free.Type PLAN below — I'll DM you my exact 90-day fitness breakdown.
The Formula
Every high-performing CTA follows the same pattern:GUIDE below and I’ll DM you the free download link.
Keep the keyword prominent, keep the reward specific, and keep the whole sentence under two lines.
